Deskom and Aris

I came across Deskom and his best friend, Aris a hot morning on Mampang Prapatan, south Jakarta, as they wandered among the traffic for a few Rupiah. Deskom was strumming on his guitar and miniature Aris singing away to try to capture the attention of motorists.

Their story is one of sadness and hope.

Deskom (15) struck me as a beautiful boy with a calm nature and great determination. He is very loyal to his friends and family. He comes from a family of five to two brothers and two sisters, aged three to 14 years. His mother did not make much money as a maid for a local Javanese family and his father sells gasoline for motorcyclists in front of his house so that he could take the child for three years.

Deskom is determined to go to school, so every morning between 7 and 11 hours, he plays guitar for passing motorists. His goal is to win Rp.40,000 - 50,000 paying for school books and clothes and all that remains is to support his parents. He goes to school at 11 am and ends at 18 hours, at which point it meets Aris and they spend a few hours in the hope of beating a little Rupiah commuters as they make their way home in traffic heavy.

Aris, who is two years younger than his faithful friend, is a very shy boy, lack of confidence and very much living in the shadow of Deskom. His mother died from bronchitis when he was four and he now lives with his father and stepmother. He can not go to school as they can not afford uniforms and books and must stay home to care for her twin sister and two brothers.

The two boys both share the same dream -. To play football like David Beckham one day

So if you happen to be driving down Mampang and see those two young boys in the fire, one with a guitar and a song, put a little Rupiah their way, it will go to a good cause.
